STREAMING MP3 OR REAL AUDIO You can easily stream your music for Internet playback without the need to convert your files to different formats or by using expensive software. The tutorial will show how a low bitrate MP3 file can be streamed with a simple text file in MP3 and Real Audio format. Note:This tutorial is based on the knowledge that you already have an understanding of web creation and uploading to your server. We are going to use CDex and Notepad to stream our files, and Stream.mp3 as our tutorial file. Before we start you should decide what sound quality you want to use for your sound files. Open 'Options/Settings' and choose your desired encoding property. By default CDex is set to the CD quality standard settings for Wav and MP3. Because we want our files to stream on the Internet we do not want to use CD quality files as it will take far to long to stream and the listener will probably not have the patience to find out if your music is any good or not. The streaming music should be used to get the listener to hear what you are like, if they like the stream then there is the chance they will download a better CD quality file. We are going to use the lower settings in CDex. Change the bitrate down from 128kbps to 32kbps, and change from Stereo to Mono.
Now encode your tracks to MP3 for streaming as explained in the 'How to convert Wav to Mp3' Help File. When we have all our tracks converted to 32kbps Mono Mp3, upload the files to your server. Open Windows Notepad and copy and paste the link to your MP3 files.
Save the Notepad file with the pasted link to Stream.m3u in your website folder for a MP3 stream. This file is also known as a 'locator file'.
And/or save the Notepad file with the pasted link to Stream.ram in your website folder for a Real Audio stream.
Now simply make a link on your website to the Stream.m3u and/or Stream.ram files. The
key to this simple way of streaming is the small file called a 'locator
file'. This file contains nothing more than the http address of the
audio file. However, this special locator file directs a listener's
player to the audio files location and instructs the media player to
play the audio stream as it is downloading. Here
is a link to the small test Stream.mp3 file (49 sec). Click on the links
below to test the streams. Note:The settings used in this tutorial are only guidelines to streaming. You can use a lower bitrate for better streaming or even a higher bitrate to enhance the audio playback quality, but remember the higher the bitrate quality the longer it will take to stream a file. |
